The real strength of Primal Queen is convenience. One capsule is easy. The weakness is that one capsule of a 337.5mg blend is a small amount of organ tissue, and most of it is the part with the least evidence behind it.

Ancestral Supplements FEM: What’s on the Label

Ancestral Supplements is a very different company. It sells single-organ products (liver, heart, kidney, bone marrow and more), a five-organ blend called Grass Fed Beef Organs, and gender-specific formulas. FEM is the women’s one.

A serving is six capsules, 30 servings a bottle. Per serving:

• Grass Fed Reproductive Tissue (Bovine) — 1,200mg (ovary, uterus and fallopian tubes)
• Grass Fed Liver (Bovine) — 900mg

That’s 3,000mg of organ tissue a day — roughly nine times Primal Queen’s total. And credit where it’s due: the liver and bone marrow doses are stated clearly, which is more than Primal Queen gives you.

But the biggest single ingredient, the 1,200mg of reproductive tissue, is lumped together. You don’t know how much is ovary and how much is uterus. And the marketing leans hard on it — FEM is positioned around “hormone balance, libido and fertility.”

Ancestral’s sourcing is a genuine strength: pasture-raised cattle from New Zealand and Australia, and the company has been doing this longer than almost anyone. Both include them — and that’s the problem. This is where the two brands agree, and where I part ways with both.

The Issue With Reproductive Organs

Here’s what bothers me about bovine ovary and uterus in a women’s supplement.

Cattle aren’t checked for where they are in their reproductive cycle before slaughter. Ovarian and uterine tissue from one animal could carry a very different hormonal profile from the next — or close to none at all. When you take a capsule of it, you have no way of knowing which one you got. For a woman in perimenopause, whose own hormones are already unpredictable, adding an unpredictable variable is the last thing I want.

And there’s no clinical evidence that eating desiccated bovine reproductive tissue does anything specific for women’s hormones. The case for these ingredients is “like supports like” — an idea from traditional practice, not from trials.

Compare that with liver, heart, kidney and bone marrow, where the benefits come from well-understood nutrients: heme iron, vitamin B12, preformed vitamin A, CoQ10, selenium, collagen. You know what you’re getting and why.

So between Primal Queen and FEM, the reproductive tissue is the largest ingredient in both. That’s the part of the formula I’d least want to pay for.
